All services offered by Meta such as Facebook, WhatsApp or Instagram are blocked in Russia
According to recent media reports, Russia has placed Meta on a list of “terrorist and extremist” organizations. The classification itself was carried out by the Russian financial regulator, as can be read on their website on October 11, 2002. The move makes it easier for Russian authorities to prosecute users in Russia.
According to a report by Interfax, this step was taken by Russia's financial monitoring service Rosfinmonitoring. The decision means that all services offered by Meta, such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, will be blocked in Russia.
Meta is now on the same list as right-wing nationalist groups, foreign terrorist organizations and Russian opposition groups. Back in March (we reported HERE ), the authorities banned Meta for “extremist activities” and blocked access to Facebook and Instagram. They accused Meta of tolerating “Russophobia.”
However, many Russians have since resorted to VPN services to continue using online networks.
Instagram is particularly popular in Russia and used to be an important platform for advertising and sales.
