The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) warns very clearly about hackers who are presumably acting on behalf of the Russian military intelligence service. There should also be further influence and “spreading of propaganda and disinformation” in favor of Russia.
Emails from Ukrainian military personnel
According to an IT security service provider, “compromised email accounts of Ukrainian military personnel are being used to carry out phishing attacks against politicians from various European governments.”
Malware is used here that is similar to that of the ghostwriter campaign. With this, members of the Bundestag became the target of phishing attacks in 2021. – We reported HERE .
In September 2021, the Foreign Office reported that the federal government “has reliable information on the basis of which the “ghostwriter” activities can be attributed to cyber actors of the Russian state and specifically to the Russian military intelligence service GRU”.
Domain “dienste-email.eu”
Just a few days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, renewed attacks by the Russian hacker group “Ghostwriter” were detected. German email addresses with the ending t-online.de were affected.
The domestic secret service is now warning that “ghostwriters” could use the newly registered domain “dienste-email.eu”. So far, however, no activity has been detected. But the BfV calls for caution here.
Connections between economics and politics
At an event organized by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Alliance for Security in the Economy on Thursday in Berlin, BfV Vice President Sinan Selen pointed out that economic activity and geopolitical situations were inevitably linked. This makes “the work of security experts in companies increasingly important,” says Selen.
