The claim

Several photos are being shared with the claim that they show the new Russian uniforms in black and with skull patches.

Our conclusion

So these are not new uniforms for the Russian military, but rather gala uniforms of the cadets of a Russian academy, which are based on uniforms from the 1910s.

When you look at the photos, you get a bad feeling: the uniforms are black and have a patch with a skull on the upper arm - supposedly new uniforms for the Russian military. But this uniform is not only over 100 years old, but it is also worn on a special occasion in Russia.

The photos

Twitter and Reddit for a few days now , always with the claim that they are the new Russian uniforms:

Apparently new Russian uniforms
Apparently new Russian uniforms

The uniform was reportedly designed by the National Academy of Art Industry in Moscow.

The origin of the photos

In fact, the photos show cadets from the Stroganov Academy of Design and Applied Arts . It is one of the oldest Russian schools of industrial, monumental and decorative art and design. The university is named after its founder, Baron Sergei Grigoriyevich Stroganov.

The photos distributed are not current, but are from 2015 (see HERE ). On the occasion of the memorial day for those who died in the First World War, flowers and a wreath were laid at the Heroes' Cenotaph in a memorial and park near the Sokol Metro.

The academy's cadets traditionally always wear these uniforms on this Russian Remembrance Day, for example in 2020 (see HERE ). But they were not designed by them; their origins are even older.

The origin of uniforms

The uniforms are based on the Kornilov Regiment , which was founded as the last regiment in the Empire and was first used in the civil war from 1917 to 1922. The right-wing Lavr Georgievich Kornilov himself was known to be extremely unscrupulous . “ The greater the terror, the greater our victories ,” was one of his slogans.

Conclusion

So these are not new uniforms for the Russian military, but rather gala uniforms of the cadets of a Russian academy, which are based on uniforms from the 1910s.

These uniforms still have an unpleasant aftertaste, as the academy doesn't keep its attitude behind the scenes. A quote on their website reads “ We are Russians, God is with us! ", the title of a Russian military anthem and supposedly a quote from General Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov-Rymnikski , which is often used by the Russian right-wing.

The academy is generally considered to be strongly nationalistic with the slogan “ Learn!” Honor! Fatherland! ", the "ancient heritage" such as the Russian Empire and the White Guard are apparently also a focus of the academy - so the cadets' gala uniforms are not particularly surprising.
