A smartphone, a photo and a story that, while true in themselves, didn't end up happening at the same time. It's about the Liverpool player Sadio Mane.
The summary of Sadio Mane and the smartphone:
In one picture you can see the football player Sadio Mane and a smartphone with a cracked display. The story told comes from an interview from autumn 2019, but it is not a response to a fan. The photo itself was only published in December 2019.
It's about humility, sustainability and values in life when you're rich. For many people, rich is generally more of a matter of definition, but when it comes to Sadio Mane, one could certainly speak of being financially wealthy.

In this context, a photo has now emerged in which the man can be seen in the service of Liverpool FC. At the same time you see another object: his smartphone! This smartphone has a cracked display. There is a viral story about the photo:
Sadio Mane, The Liverpool star from Senegal (earnings around $10.2 million annually), has taught the world a lesson in humility after some fans spotted him with a cracked iPhone.
His answer is legendary: “Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches and two jet planes? What would that do for the world? I was starving, I worked in the fields, played barefoot and didn't go to school. Now I can help people. I'd rather build schools and give food or clothing to poor people. I built schools [and] a stadium; we provide clothing, shoes and food for people in extreme poverty. I also give 70 euros a month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region to contribute to their family economy. I don't need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips and even airplanes. I prefer my people to receive a little of what life has given me,” Mane said.

Sadio Mane and luxury
Briefly about the chain letter: Apart from the fact that the figure of 10.2 million dollars is not documented anywhere (we are talking about 5.7 million euros ), Mane did make the statement about luxury.
He didn't say this to fans, but to an African newspaper in October 2019. This article and the quote are dated October 13, 2019 ( compare ). The English original is:

“Why would I want 10 Ferraris, 20 watches or 2 planes? I survived hard times, played football barefoot, did not have an education. But today I can help my people build schools, stadiums and buy clothes and food. I prefer to give out what life has given me.”
The Kurier, among others, also writes about Mane's commitment, including the player's statement about the luxury ( see here ). Deutsche Welle also described Mane's actions in an article ( here ).
What does the smartphone have to do with it?
First and foremost, the smartphone with the splintered display has nothing to do with this, because the photo with the smartphone has no temporal connection to his statement.
Nevertheless, there is an interesting story about the smartphone, which can ultimately be put into context: Mane was given the smartphone at the beginning of October 2019 ( see here ), and the photo with the shattered display was only published in December 2019.

Although Mane would have enough money for a new smartphone, he can be seen in the photo with the damaged model. Here at least the content comes full circle.
Still, it's worth mentioning: No, Mane didn't make the statement about luxury to fans after this photo was taken.
