The BSI for Citizens therefore provides advice on IT security for children, because digital security for children is playing an increasingly important role. Even elementary school students often have their own smartphone. We all use the internet as a matter of course, searching, sharing, posting and chatting. Even the youngest children take their first steps on the Internet at an early age. The following applies here: smart devices, yes, but they should be safe. What you should pay attention to as a parent:
Quickly chat with friends on the way to school, watch video streams during the break and upload the latest photos to social networks when you get back home: while children around the age of 6 use the Internet 35 percent of the time, the proportion among children increases by 12 years to 94 percent. This is the result of the KIM study (Children + Media, Computer + Internet) .

One of the most popular activities among young Internet users is searching for information at least once a week (70 percent), for example for homework. 57 percent use messenger services. 50 percent of children watch films and videos regularly.
survey by the BSI has shown that children take their first steps on the Internet from preschool age at the latest It is well known that there are many dangers lurking on the Internet from which children in particular need to be protected. In many families, the offspring use PCs , smartphones, etc. more often than their parents. Parents should therefore introduce their children to age-appropriate use of the Internet at an early stage. As with all educational topics, the same applies when building media skills: education in discussions is the top priority. In order to be able to do this, parents should be aware of the greatest dangers that children are exposed to on the Internet and inform themselves in advance. The BSI offers a wide range of information in words and pictures.
Know risks
Most people initially associate dangers for children on the Internet with content that is considered harmful to young people. These include online games that glorify violence or pornographic offerings. Forums and chat programs are also known to be used by people who can easily hide their true identity.
