A video circulating is intended to prove that we also eat an invisible layer of plastic when we eat salad. Real scandal or lack of knowledge of biology?

You just can't trust the food! Just a year ago we reported on alleged plastic rice , now another scandal seems to be brewing: plastic salad! This is what the plastic should look like:

In that video, a woman heats a bowl of water in the microwave and then submerges the salad in it (not uncommon; this method is called " shock heating " to preserve fruits and vegetables for longer). Then she takes one of the lettuce leaves and peels off what actually looks a bit like a plastic layer.

Here is the video:

Plastic?

Now we could enter a wonderful world of conspiracy theories in which not only rice is made of plastic, but also salad, which is apparently made more durable by being covered with a layer of plastic, which we then eat. But no, we'd rather go into the more amazing world of biology, which even has a name for this “plastic”.

“Epidermic peeling”

Romaine lettuce is one of the most common types of lettuce in households.
One of the largest growing areas for this type of lettuce in the USA is Arizona. During the growing season, lettuces are sometimes exposed to temperatures around freezing point, but lettuce protects itself against this in a natural way: it forms a protective layer in cold temperatures that can be removed. Here a farmer explains this skin, which is difficult to remove when processing the lettuce.

Conclusion

No, not plastic on the lettuce, but a natural protective reaction of the plant in cold temperatures.
