Salt water attracts worms from strawberries – the most important thing to start with:

There are currently some videos circulating on the Internet that disgust viewers. Insects crawl out of strawberries if you put them in salt water. However, experts say that eating the animals is harmless.

Strawberry enjoyment

What could be better? Fresh fruits – sweetly ripened under the sun – directly from the region, which have not had to travel forever. Every year we look forward to the seasonal delicacies. Right at the top of the popularity scale: strawberries. You get a tray full, ideally wash it under a little water and enjoy it. That's how it has been so far, but some videos could change that.

Hashtag #strawberrybugs

Videos have now been published on TikTok that show what happens when you put strawberries in salt water.

There are now numerous videos under the hashtag #strawberrybugs that have a total of over 11 million views.

It turns out that the salt water causes some of Strawberry's residents to leave their previous homes. Small worms and beetles crawl out of the fruit. Animals that were previously simply eaten.

Harmless animals

Experts say that the small animals found in the fruit are harmless.

Greg Loeb, an entomologist and professor at Cornell University, told CNN:

“When you eat fresh produce, you are eating insects. Sometimes we entomologists joke that it’s just a little more protein.”

According to Loeb, eating these small insects causes no harm:

“The real point is that there are organisms on fruits, and even if it makes people feel uncomfortable, it definitely won't harm them. If you eat these bugs, you won’t get sick.”

Loeb adds that water is enough to safely wash fruits and vegetables. Plus, salt water and strawberries just don't mix. The taste suffers massively from the special washing.
