Everyone knows it: you're browsing Facebook and suddenly the perfect competition pops up. A top brand like Samsonite, just a few clicks away and the chance to win a suitcase that's almost free. But before you show up at the airport with your supposed winnings on your next vacation, you could fall into an expensive subscription trap. We went looking for clues.

The tempting offer

The scammers from “Koffer-Paradies” know their craft. A competition that promises that 500 people could get hold of an elegant Samsonite Proxis suitcase for just 1.95 euros. And who could resist that? Especially when numerous comments from supposed winners confirm the offer and can hardly contain their joy.

The threads of deception

But, as is so often the case, the devil is in the details. The profiles that post these praising comments are by no means the actual users. Our research shows that criminals have likely hacked the profiles and used them for their fraudulent purposes. And the worst: They use these real profiles to make their fake competitions more credible.

Click, click, and you're in

The “Order now” button ultimately lures us to a fake Samsonite website that impresses with its attention to detail. A short survey is already waiting there, which draws us even further into the fraudsters' network. This is followed by a supposed game of chance: three attempts to find the right suitcase. And oh wonder, you always score on the third try.

What is the catch?

As soon as you are in the euphoria of “winning”, the fraudsters demand sensitive data, including credit card details. And here, well hidden, you will find the true intention of it all: a subscription that, after a three-day trial period, turns into a monthly debit of 70 euros!

Because the small print says:

The subscription has a trial period of 3 days. If the subscription is not canceled during this trial period, you will be charged €67.00 every 30 days until you cancel your subscription. Canceling your subscription is easy. You can click on the cancellation link contained in the welcome email sent to you or contact customer service by phone +44 1623 272435 or email support@bookunwind.io .

The way out of the trap

If you have already fallen into this trap, you act quickly . Contact the subscription provider immediately, cancel the subscription and request a refund of the unauthorized amounts debited. And if the subscription provider doesn't cooperate? Then your credit card company is the next point of contact. There you can ask for the amounts to be reversed and, if necessary, have your card blocked to prevent further damage.

Protection against online fraud

It may sound obvious, but skepticism is your best friend in the digital age. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Don't blindly trust everything you read online and always question the source. A quick Google search can often provide information about whether the offer is reputable or not.

Conclusion: The promises of “suitcase paradise” and similar scammers are tempting, but they often only lead to a cost trap. With vigilance and skepticism, we can protect ourselves and ensure that we do not become the next victims of these digital crooks. Because as the saying goes: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Maintain your curiosity, but always with a pinch of caution!
