Energy efficiency: Replacing doesn't always make sense
When it comes to kitchen appliances, it is often not necessary to scrap the old appliances and make room for new, more energy-saving appliances. Small tricks can often save a lot of energy and therefore electricity costs.
When it comes to refrigerators and freezers, for example, it can be worthwhile to take a closer look at the respective temperatures. For food that will only be stored for about a month, a temperature of -15 degrees is sufficient in the freezer. At the refrigerator temperature, 7 degrees Celsius is sufficient.
It is also advisable not to heat the oven at full temperature the entire time when using the oven, but rather to use the accumulated residual heat towards the end of the roasting or baking time.
Save electricity on your tumble dryer and washing machine
Old tumble dryers can literally be real “power spinners” – one cycle often costs up to one euro. New devices use around 70% less. A new purchase is worthwhile here and usually pays for itself after just a few years. However, you can save the most electricity by completely avoiding machine drying - so it's best to air dry.
You should use an energy meter to check whether the old washing machine is actually such an energy guzzler that it is worth buying a new one - some old devices are actually quite economical.
Standby uses electricity – always switch everything off
Standby mode in particular can have a noticeable impact on your electricity bill. Even in sleep mode, most devices still consume power - especially those that are connected to a network. Therefore, you should definitely make sure to unplug it at night or when no one is at home.
