Not only are energy prices rising, electricity consumption is also increasing every year. According to the Austrian environmental protection organization Global 2000, electricity consumption has increased by 40 percent in the last 15 years. If you follow a few energy-saving tips, you can save a lot of electricity and money.
8 tips on how to save energy
Global 2000 (independent environmental protection organization) offers eight tips on how to reduce electricity consumption.
Wash up to save energy
Only turn on the dishwasher when it is full. Around a quarter of hot water consumption in households comes from the kitchen. Washing dishes properly can minimize energy consumption. But here too, despite the energy saving program, it is better to switch on fully once than half twice.
Cooking – Every pot has its own lid
If you cook without a lid, you need around three times as much energy as with a lid. But the same applies when cooking with a lid: the cooking pot should be placed on a plate that is appropriate to its size.
Washing – Full machine, economy program
A washing machine needs the same amount of energy regardless of whether it is full or half loaded. Loading the washing machine fully and using an energy saving program pays off. The choice of temperature is also important. 70 percent of a washing machine's energy consumption comes from heating it up. Nowadays, boiling is usually no longer necessary; 60 or 40 degrees is usually sufficient.
Refrigerator & Freezers
Correct installation and adjustment saves electricity. An internal temperature of seven degrees is normally sufficient in the refrigerator, which saves around 15 percent of electricity compared to a temperature of five degrees. It is just as important to set up the refrigerator correctly. It uses less electricity if it is placed in a cool place and as far away as possible from heat sources such as stoves or radiators.
Refrigerators and freezers are among the largest consumers of electricity in the home, consuming around one kilowatt hour per day. Therefore, it is advisable to turn off the refrigerator and defrost the freezer during a vacation. This makes it possible to save a lot of electricity, especially in summer, as the power consumption of the cooling devices increases with every degree of increase in room temperature.
Integrate the solar system into the hot water circuit
If you have a solar system, you can integrate it into the hot water circuit and connect it in front of the washing machine and dishwasher. For example, this saves another 30 percent of electricity in the dishwasher.
lighting
When purchasing lighting fixtures, pay attention to the energy label. Modern LEDs consume little energy and have a long service life. Attention: Halogen lamps are not energy-saving lamps and have a comparatively high energy consumption.
Bye bye standby
Ten percent of household electricity consumption comes from “stand by”. Over the course of a year, some devices even use more electricity in standby mode than in operation. Old devices are particularly problematic: they consume up to 25 watts in standby. Hidden power guzzlers are mainly espresso machines, televisions, video recorders, power supplies and the “home office” (PC, printer). Did you know that leaving a printer on standby for 24 hours uses 20 times more power than printing 20 pages a day? After use, simply switch off the device and save electricity. The simplest solution is to purchase a power strip with a switch.
Energy label
When buying new electrical appliances, pay attention to the energy label. Washing machines, refrigerators and freezers, stoves and ovens in particular have a long service life and should, if possible, meet the highest standards.
Air conditioning units are energy guzzlers
Air conditioners require a lot of electricity. If modern buildings are built correctly, they can function without additional cooling. In old buildings, thermal renovation can save not only heating but also cooling energy. Proper shading and night ventilation can also provide cooling. If you still don't want to do without air conditioning, you should at least pay attention to a high standard of efficiency. Mobile air conditioning units should definitely be avoided. Although they can be set up anywhere, air must be supplied, usually through tilted windows. Warm air flows in and around 25 percent of the power is lost.
Switch off the electric boiler
The electric water boiler also has enormous savings potential. If no one is at home, no one needs warm water - so you should simply turn off the boiler before a trip. After your vacation, it is advisable to heat up the boiler properly to kill germs.
