Oil and fuel prices continue to rise. Small changes in driving behavior help save petrol and diesel. Tips from an expert.
Worryingly high fuel prices
Due to the war in Ukraine, the prices for diesel and gasoline have risen sharply in the last few days and weeks. Many people are worried about how long prices will be this high and whether they will be able to continue to afford to drive. In the video, Herbert Fuss from ADAC shows us what you can pay attention to in order to save as much fuel as possible when driving.
The correct driving style
Fuel consumption can be influenced primarily by shifting gears early and by anticipating driving behavior. If you keep the speed low, you use less fuel. If you see a red light, you shouldn't just brake just before you reach the waiting line, but instead take your foot off the accelerator and let the car coast to a stop. Constantly switching between accelerating, releasing the accelerator and braking costs an incredible amount of fuel because the speed keeps increasing.
Other savings options in the car
In addition to a more conscious driving style, you can also save fuel by paying more attention to certain points in and on the car: Too low air pressure in the tires can quickly lead to higher consumption. You should therefore always check whether the pressure corresponds to the manufacturer's specifications. In the car itself, the auxiliary heater, the air conditioning and also the window heaters consume electricity that is produced by the engine. Although you can't always do without the heaters for the front and rear windows due to road safety reasons, you often leave them on for longer than is necessary. Another reason for excessive fuel consumption can be unnecessary weight: you should only transport heavy bags in the trunk, a ski box on the roof or a bicycle rack in the trunk when you need them.
