Consumer advice center gives tips on saving and classifies the consumption of private households.

Less is more

Showering instead of bathing usually helps to save water. In general, the following applies: “The shorter the better, and you don’t have to shower every day. This is good for the environment, your wallet and your own skin,” says Joshua Jahn from the Brandenburg Consumer Center. To save on energy costs, a cold shower can also help in the summer, as saving hot water will quickly have a noticeable impact on your wallet. A new shower head will also help you save money.

Economy shower head – small costs, big savings

An economical shower head costs around 20 euros, but saves up to 50 percent of hot water consumption. The full water jet is retained, although much less water is used. The trick: The energy-saving shower head simply mixes in air. The new shower head should have a water flow of less than nine liters per minute. A four-person household can save up to 300 euros a year.

Aerators, also known as flow limiters, also use the same principle. These cost-effective and easy-to-install savings devices are simply attached to the faucet.

Use the eco program and use energy-efficient devices

Eco programs for washing machines and dishwashers also use less water. Even compared to short programs, water and electricity consumption is sometimes lower, even though the machine runs significantly longer. In addition, you should load the devices as fully as possible so that they do not run unnecessarily often and thus use more water than necessary.

If you want to buy a new device, you should definitely pay attention to water consumption and energy efficiency. “Anyone who turns a blind eye to a supposed bargain will pay extra in the long term in terms of electricity and water costs,” says the expert. The EU energy label provides guidance. There the devices are sorted into energy efficiency classes based on letters. Devices are more economical the further up in the alphabet they are. If possible, you should buy a new device from the best class A.
