The perpetrators usually create offers on the eBay trading platform and offer pet food at sales prices that are significantly lower than usual retail prices. Interested parties order in the belief that they are getting a bargain. Payment is usually made via the financial service provider Paypal. As part of the ordering process, customers provide their personal data.

The perpetrators, in turn, use this data to order the food they advertise from reputable online retailers in the name of the injured party. The food is then delivered by the reputable dealers to the injured parties, the original purchasers on eBay. Of course, this food delivery is not paid for by the perpetrators.

The subsequent payment requests from reputable dealers usually do not reach the injured party because they are sent by email to an address that does not actually belong to the injured party. Only through the dunning process, which is carried out by post to the actual delivery address, are the injured parties informed about the incident.

Due to the time delay until the reminder procedure, the feed has already been used up and the delivery packaging is no longer available. The injured parties can no longer understand which eBay dealer was assigned to the perpetrators. The investigations so far have shown that the perpetrators are based in Asia.

The Northeim Police Department's prevention team recommends being careful, especially with particularly cheap offers and unknown shops, and using the experiences of other buyers before buying.
