The calls are mostly from British numbers and are received without being asked. Ignore the calls or hang up! Here you can only lose money.

Until now, the criminals behind investment scams have mostly tried to persuade their victims to invest spam emails , made-up SMS messages or fake news articles Now they are apparently relying on so-called cold calls (unsolicited calls) to lure people into a trap.

What's behind it?

If you receive such a call, hang up immediately. The criminals on the other end of the phone are trying to convince you to invest on a fraudulent trading platform. For more on fraudulent investment platforms: Check our list . The criminals mention Bitcoin, claim to trade in Amazon shares, or pretend to speculate on the price of oil. So that you decide to invest, you are led to believe that everything is 100 percent safe and that you will only get out with a profit.

Warning: The promises are too good to be true. Risk-free investments do not exist. Here they only care about your money.

How do criminals get your number?

Unfortunately, we cannot say with certainty where criminals get their potential victims' phone numbers. We assume that they partly rely on public registers, but sometimes also on data from data leaks.

Parts of the Watchlist Internet team also receive such calls despite great caution when dealing with personal cell phone numbers.

Hang up immediately!

If you receive such a call, hang up immediately. This is the best way to show that there is no chance of convincing you to invest.

The British area code with which calls are currently frequently made is “+44”.

You can then block the number on your smartphone so that you cannot be called from the same number again.

Have you already invested?

If you have been convinced of an investment, you should immediately contact your chosen payment service provider and ask about the options for getting the money back. If you are stuck with your damages, the only option is usually to go to the nearest police station. You can file a police report there.
