The police are warning of a new scam: fake police officers and an alleged criminal gang are working in tandem. They jointly put their victims under pressure and demand that they hand over cash and valuables.

In the scam, a fake police officer first answers the phone and warns about a supposed criminal gang from Romania.

The police arrested two members of this gang. During the arrest, they found notes that suggested that these members had knowledge of the financial situation of the person being called. Accordingly, it makes sense that the criminals could possibly also contact you by telephone and demand that money be handed over.

After the supposed warning call from the police, a call comes from the alleged criminals. They actually demand the return of cash and valuables and put their victims under massive pressure. The fake police then call again: they overheard the phone call with the criminals and asked for cooperation. The fraudsters' demands should be met so that the police can arrest the criminals when the money is handed over. Afterwards you would of course get your valuables and cash back.

The perfidious thing about the scam: The calls from the fake police officers and the alleged criminal gang alternate during the fraud. The victims are constantly kept on the phone and are therefore put under increasing pressure from both sides. This means you have no opportunity to reflect on your actions and possibly contact the real police.

The police warn urgently about this scam:

  • Don't let yourself be put under pressure on the phone and just hang up.
  • If you have the slightest doubt, call the police emergency number - and not the number given to you by the fake police officers.
  • Never reveal details about your financial situation over the phone.
  • Do not respond to requests to hand over money or valuables.
  • If you shorten your first name in the phone book or leave it out completely, fraudsters will have a difficult time tracking you down
    .
  • If you become a victim of fraud, be sure to report it.
  • Also talk to your relatives and friends about these scams - so that fraudsters don't find victims in the future.
