A 37-year-old woman from the Aerzen area fell victim to a new phishing scam on Wednesday evening (July 6th, 2022). The damage she suffered is in the four-digit range.

The woman had listed an item for sale on eBay classifieds and included her cell phone number in her personal information. A little later she received a text message saying that a friend of hers was interested in the item and that if she wanted to “pay securely”, she should follow the link provided, which the 37-year-old did, as eBay Kleinanzeigen officially has the “secure” “Pay function” offers.

The link took the unsuspecting woman to a website that looked confusingly similar to eBay classifieds (phishing site). By entering their personal information, the perpetrators obtained their account details.

The 3rd specialist commissionerate of the Hameln-Pyrmont/Holzminden police station, which is responsible for fraud, only investigates computer fraud.

Police Chief Inspector Philip Wollenhaupt expressly warns not to post phone numbers on the Internet and never to give out credit card or account details! EBay Classifieds has a secure chat function that prevents such scams. eBay Kleinanzeigen also strongly recommends that transactions be carried out exclusively via the website or its apps.
