Fraudsters call guests directly in the hotel room, pretend to be a receptionist and ask for the guest's credit card number.
Fraudsters try to get hotel guests’ credit card numbers over the phone:
On October 14, 2019, there were several fraudulent calls to the phones of various hotel rooms in a hotel in Essen, Am Handelshof Street.
An unknown man posed as a front desk employee and asked for hotel guests' credit card numbers in order to supposedly transfer money back to the guest's account. The guests found this suspicious and asked the receptionist. The employees actually didn't make the calls and alerted the police.

Even if no guest has yet sent their data to the fraudsters, the police are explicitly warning against this new approach. Criminals repeatedly call their victims at home and pretend to be a grandchild, an old friend, an employee of Microsoft, for example, or a police officer.
The police advise:
- Be suspicious!
- Never give information about your financial situation or your personal information (ID, bank card, account number, etc.) over the phone.
- If a call seems suspicious, hang up immediately!
- If you suspect fraud, report it to the police.
