A screenshot with lots of small icons is shared on social media. The claim: Each of these icons is a ship that runs on heavy fuel oil.

This map with the many dots is now contrasted with the fact that all these ships are allowed to sail on international waters with heavy fuel oil without retribution, but in Germany every diesel engine receives the most severe criticism. This is what the caption reads:

Each of these points is a ship. These ships run on diesel and heavy fuel oil. But Germany is destroying its car industry because of combustion engines and wants to save the world. Asylum Germany.

The Sharepic itself is not new, but appeared for the first time in July 2019. Nevertheless, the following image continues to be shared on Facebook and WhatsApp:

The Fact Check: Ships

We published a fact check on this Sharepic in July 2019. At that time there were various screenshots that all conveyed the same message, but showed different map sections.

The screenshot is not fake, it shows a map of Marine Traffic. This is a live system that maps the positions of ships that use the so-called AIS signal. A current presentation can be found on the website www.marinetraffic.com .

The screenshots show ships and are not fake. However, the description of the images is manipulative because, in addition to tankers and cargo ships, sailing ships or smaller ships with AIS signals that are not powered by heavy oil or diesel are also shown.

Note: Radios with the AIS signal are only required for ships of a certain size. Therefore, not all small boats are recorded in MarineTraffic.

The degree of zoom also plays an important role. On the map you can see one icon for each vehicle, which is of course oversized when viewed globally. When you zoom in, it puts things into perspective a bit. In this respect, the global image looks like a “hidden object” because in this setting the icons move close together.
