The claim
Apparently, according to a genuine letter from the Austrian Red Cross, a migrant family of three receives over €5,000 per month.
Our conclusion
The letter only lists the three children who receive increased family allowance due to identified disabilities, but the family actually consists of 10 people, which justifies the high monthly amount.
A topic that has been popular for years is currently being taken up again on WhatsApp: social envy when, at first glance, refugees receive huge amounts of money, while pensioners in this country (who always have to act as a counterpoint) are starving. This is also the case with the letter from the Austrian Red Cross, which dates back to 2015, but is still good for excitement:
A migrant family receives a total of €5,118.10 per month. Right? Yes!
The writing
The photo of this letter is (anonymized by us):

The subject of the letter is “ Compilation of available monthly funds ”. There is no more precise information about the family that receives the benefits, but three children are named who receive increased family allowances due to identified disabilities.
The excitement about the letter can be found in a line before the last paragraph: “ The family currently has the following monthly funds available: € 5118.10.-. “
The family has more than 3 children!
The total amount would actually be very high if the family only had three children, but the letter only lists the children who receive increased family allowance due to identified disabilities. In fact, the family has 10 children.
In 2016, we asked the Austrian Red Cross the background to the letter and received the following statement:

With reference to the letter, the OÖ. Red Cross made the following clear:
This is a compilation of the needs-based minimum income including family allowance benefits, which was received by the 10-member family A. as part of their humanitarian reception program. The family was in the care of Upper Austria for around six months. Red Cross.
In July 2015, the family was given an alternative apartment. This letter was written for this purpose as a bureaucratic service. The support contributions mentioned are exclusively government grants and not funds from the Red Cross.
We also asked the following additional questions.
These were passed on directly to colleagues at the Red Cross Upper Austria:
1) Why is such a letter issued by the Red Cross and not by a responsible office?
Answer: The family was in the care of Upper Austria. Red Cross and that is why the letter was issued. It makes dealing with authorities easier.
2) Is the mentioned monthly amount still being paid out? and
3) Would exactly the same amount be achieved if it were an Austrian family?
We cannot provide you with any information on points 2 and 3 because the state and federal governments are responsible here. We as the Red Cross have no influence on this at all.
Conclusion
The letter is genuine, but the outrage then and now is for false reasons. It is not a family of 3, but a family of 10, of which three children receive increased family allowance due to identified disabilities, so the high monthly amount is justified.
