The Meta Group alone, which includes platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, records an annual increase in users of 12 percent. Social media accounts are extremely lucrative targets for cybercriminals - their high level of distribution makes it easy to find a victim in cases of identity theft, the distribution of malicious code, the acquisition of payment information or blackmail.
Using examples, ESET security expert Thomas Uhlemann shows how social media accounts were stolen and how users can best protect themselves.
“Social network accounts contain a lot of personal information. Unfortunately, these are often not adequately protected,” explains Thomas Uhlemann, ESET Security Specialist. “A recent survey we commissioned underlines the need to catch up when it comes to security. Only a quarter of those surveyed use a password manager. One in five people continue to use a notebook to manage login details. But at least almost 50 percent of those surveyed sometimes use two-factor authentication for online services, more than one in four even always. However, one in four people still forego it completely.”
After the vacation, the Facebook account was gone
In his article, Thomas Uhlemann reports, among other things, on the case of a journalist. Shortly after his vacation, he discovered that he could no longer log into his Facebook account. The “forgotten password” function was no help either, as the email address was changed and two-factor authentication was also activated for his account. But how did the hackers get their access data? While on vacation, the affected person connected to the hotel Wi-Fi and installed a supposed “certificate”. Apparently this gave the criminals access to his login details. An odyssey began to get the account back.
The article on WeLiveSecurity also highlights another case on Instagram. However, both incidents make it clear that a password alone is hardly enough to protect access data in an emergency. There are general tips on how social media accounts can be reliably secured.
