A lot of personal data is stored on the smartphone and this needs to be protected. We give you tips on the most important security settings.
Protect the device from unauthorized access
- Pin code: Secure your device or SIM card with a pin code. Avoid simple number sequences or personal information such as date of birth.
- Screen lock: You now have different options to protect your smartphone from intruders, e.g. B. by entering a password , pattern unlocking , fingerprint or facial recognition .
Update operating system & apps regularly
- Keep operating system up to date : Make regular system updates. This is the only way to close security gaps and repair and improve functions.
- Automatic app updates: Always keep apps up to date. Allow apps to update automatically. For Android devices, you can find this setting directly in the Playstore. For IOS devices in the settings. Tip: Only allow automatic updates on a Wi-Fi connection .
Activate Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and AirDrop (IOS) only when in use
Once paired, your device automatically connects to devices or Wi-Fi connections - practical, but at the same time a security risk. Data exchange via Bluetooth, WLAN or AirDrop can be spied on relatively easily. So only turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and AirDrop when you need them. This simple security measure not only protects against unauthorized access, but also saves battery.
Use open WiFi safely
- Only use WiFi connections with password protection . Connections that are not password protected represent the greatest security risk .
- Regardless of whether you have a password or not: Never type in passwords, credit card or bank details on a public WLAN .
- Check which WLANs connect automatically . Adjust if necessary and delete unknown networks!
Protect against cost traps
- Disable in-app purchases: Many apps allow you to purchase virtual items, upgrades, subscriptions, or additional features while using them. Prevent these purchases from happening accidentally or unintentionally and disable in-app purchases .
- Mobile data: Check your data volume regularly. Set to be notified when your data is about to run out. To avoid unwanted costs, deactivate data roaming abroad (especially outside the EU).
- Block value-added services: You can deactivate third-party services in your network provider's customer portal or in the app. You can also have value-added services blocked via the mobile phone provider's service hotline or shop.
Location access from apps
Check your settings to see which apps are allowed to access your location. Assign permissions sparingly!
Two-factor authentication
- Android: Your Android device's operating system is linked to your Google account . Protect this with two-factor authentication .
- IOS: Protect your Apple ID with two-factor authentication (Settings > Your Name > Password & Security > Two-Factor Authentication).
Tip:
Protect all user accounts with a secure password and, if possible, two-factor authentication !
Protect incoming messages from prying eyes
Your smartphone shows some of the incoming messages as a preview despite the locked screen. To ensure that no one sees your communications, it is advisable to adjust the notification setting.
- Android: You can find this feature in your settings under “Notifications” or “Apps & notifications”. The other names vary depending on the manufacturer. Either the setting must be made in the individual apps or the message preview can be adjusted by activating a controller.
- IOS: Settings > Notifications > Show previews > Never
