Sex, eroticism and pornography are often still taboo topics today, even though our society is permeated by sexualized content. Whether in music videos, in advertising or on social networks: everywhere we find relevant content and representations that children and young people come into contact with.
The almost unhindered access to the Internet (see current KIM and JIM studies ), for example via smartphone, makes access to pornographic content even easier. They offer young people an anonymous, free and easily accessible basis for dealing with their own and other people's sexuality. Sex websites on the Internet also give them the opportunity to orient themselves, satisfy their desires and their own curiosity and gain initial experience of how “it” could work. Added to this is the thrill of doing something “forbidden”.
The fact that young people engage with sexual or pornographic content is normal and part of their developmental task, but adults often encounter risk- and problem-oriented fears, such as the possibility of sexual neglect, a decline in values or an increased willingness to use violence on the part of their children.
But is that actually the case?
Various studies have refuted the idea that pornography causes sexual neglect; instead, the opposite is the case: young people today are more responsible and consensual when it comes to their first sexual experiences. At the same time, consuming pornographic content does not have to lead to absurd sexual ideas or fundamentally incorrect gender images.
Above all, it is crucial that the parents' concerns do not result in protective, pedagogical reflexes, but rather encourage them to talk openly about sexual topics with the young people right from the start. From a pedagogical perspective, it is essential not to leave children and young people alone in this process, but to accompany and support them competently, openly and calmly.
They need values and norms in order to be able to classify sexual or pornographic images and to develop an enlightened idea of sexuality, and adults who can help them develop appropriate judgment. In this way, you can give young people the knowledge to be responsible and self-determined while at the same time giving them enough freedom to gain appropriate experience - online and offline.
Offers that combine sexuality and violence, such as the use of strangulation techniques during lovemaking, are particularly dangerous to development. When imitating such practices, children and young people can be placed in life-threatening situations and/or get false ideas about sexual acts. Accordingly, adults are asked to provide children and young people with the appropriate knowledge in a preventive manner so that they can encounter these images and film scenes in a self-determined and reflective manner.
Adolescents are under so-called pressure to perform and need support in breaking away from the idea that sexuality happens according to a script. The aim should be to encourage young people to discover their own bodies and the associated needs and preferences.
