Internet users have been receiving blackmail emails for some time now. The LKA NRW is now warning of a new wave that is currently rolling in.

The North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office is warning of a new wave of extortionate emails. The scam is called sextortion .

In the emails, the perpetrators threaten to publish nude pictures or videos that allegedly show the victim performing sexual acts. They claim to have hacked the victim's computer and thereby gained access to the webcam. The perpetrators present passwords or personal data as alleged evidence . These often come from previous hacking attacks against large providers or online service providers. The perpetrators acquire the data on the Darknet and use it for their own purposes.

In other cases, the perpetrators make contact via social networks. They encourage the victims to engage in sexual acts in a video chat, film everything and threaten to publish it.

The perpetrators always demand amounts of money via payment services or in a cryptocurrency, for example Bitcoins.

The LKA NRW recommends not complying with fraudsters' demands for money keeping the operating system and virus protection In addition, the webcam should be deactivated or masked off when not in use.

Do not allow yourself to be blackmailed by threatening emails and in any case report it to the police , advises the State Criminal Police Office of North Rhine-Westphalia.
