Sex + extortion = sextortion
The name of this scam comes from the words “sex” and “extortion”. And that's exactly what these emails are about. It is stated that the sender has video recordings in which the recipient can be seen sexually masturbating. If you do not comply with your payment request, the video material would be sent to friends and relatives or even distributed publicly.

“If you have any doubts, I can make a few clicks of the mouse and all your videos will be shared with your friends, colleagues and relatives.
Excerpt from the blackmail email
I also have no problem at all with making them available to the public.
I suspect that you really don't want to do that, because given the specificity of the videos you like to watch (you know exactly what I mean), that would be a real disaster for you.
Let’s arrange it this way:
You transfer me $400 (in Bitcoin equivalent according to the exchange rate at the time of the money transfer), and once the transfer is received, I will immediately delete all this dirty stuff.”
The sender states a certain amount as a demand, which should be paid in Bitcoin. If you comply, the incriminating videos will be deleted.
Blackmail from your own address
In many cases it seems as if the emails are being sent from your own email address. In doing so, the sender also explains that he hacked the recipient's system some time ago and thereby gained access. But don't worry: only the email header was manipulated here.
Specifying the password
It also happens that the email contains the recipient's password, which, shockingly, is also correct. Here, too, it is not the case that there is a hack attack behind it. As our cooperation partner Watchlist Internet reports, it is more likely that the password was already known on the Internet beforehand.
This can happen if companies experience data leaks. When security problems like this occur, cybercriminals like to grab email addresses, passwords and other data. Such data is traded on the dark web. This makes it easy to obtain sensitive data if you have enough criminal energy.
This is how you can protect yourself
Especially if a correct password is given in the email, you should act urgently:
- Check all accounts where you use this password and change it immediately.
- Choose strong passwords!
- Use different passwords for all your accounts.
- Use two-factor authentication where possible.
- Update your operating system and run a virus scan on it.
- If a specific account is no longer accessible, contact the service or site operator. There are often separate places for hacked accounts.
not complying with demands
The police recommend not complying with the demands and filing a report at the nearest police station.
- Don't transfer money! The blackmail usually doesn't stop after the payment.
- Report to the police.
- Do not respond to messages, stop contact with anonymous people immediately.
- Save chat histories, messages, emails using screenshots.
