A 20-year-old man was the victim of so-called “sextortion”.
He was contacted by an unknown person via an online platform and asked to exchange intimate photos. But there is a fraudster on the other side. He has nothing to do with the person he claims to be and just wants to gut his victim.

In this “sextortion” case, the 20-year-old was asked to transfer a three-digit amount of money so that his photos would not be published on the Internet. After he transferred a partial amount, the photos still ended up on the Internet. The 20-year-old filed a police report.

Approach of the perpetrators

The perpetrators' approach is as simple as it is devious:
after the fraudsters have contacted the subsequent victims via social platforms, an intimate picture of the supposed chat partner follows. The victim is then asked to also send sexual recordings, otherwise the conversation is over.

After sending the recordings, the threat follows that the image or video will be published on the Internet if the requested amount of money is not paid.

Police recommendations

How to protect yourself from this form of crime:

  • Don't rush into agreeing to a video chat or taking intimate pictures.
  • If in doubt, leave the chat camera turned off initially. Communicate only verbally and get an initial insight into what is happening.
  • Do not engage in exposure or intimate acts via video or chat if you have only known the person for a short time.

If you have already been a victim of sextortion, contact the police:

  • Do not transfer money. The demands usually don't stop after a payment.
  • Report it to the police.
  • Contact the site operator and arrange for the images to be deleted. There are usually buttons on websites specifically designed to report inappropriate content.
