The Internet offers many opportunities to network and exchange ideas, but it also harbors dangers. The increasing prevalence of “sextortion” or sexual blackmail is a worrying development. In this article, we would like to use a story to show how easily you can become a victim of such machinations and what measures you should take to protect yourself.

The encounter

It all started with an acquaintance from the Internet. A 56-year-old man received a message from a female profile on a social network. After writing to each other for a while, they agreed to have a video call and sexually stimulate each other.

The blackmail

The man fulfilled his part of the bargain. The perpetrator or perpetrators then ended the video call. Suddenly there were threats and attempts at blackmail. The man was asked to transfer a sum of money amounting to several hundred euros, otherwise the recorded video would be sent to his friends and family.

The aftermath

The man was ashamed and afraid of social embarrassment, gave in and transferred a mid-three-digit amount. But it did not stop. The perpetrators shamelessly took advantage of the situation and continued to try to extort money from the man.

Various “sextortion” methods

The “sextortion” scam comes in different variations. In addition to the aforementioned direct blackmail attempts after video calls, computer-generated emails are also sent. The potential victim is asked to transfer money or Bitcoins because compromising videos were allegedly recorded of the victim consuming pornographic material.

Protective measures and prevention

To protect yourself from such incidents, it is very important that you never send nude or intimate images via video message or make video calls with people you do not know. If you are confronted with such blackmail attempts, do not accept any demands for money. In most cases, the claims are not stopped even after a transfer. Discontinue contact and report the matter to your local law enforcement authorities.

Conclusion

The 56-year-old's story shows how easy it is to become a victim of “sextortion”. It is important to be aware of the dangers. Be careful when dealing with strangers on the Internet. Don't let shame or fear of social embarrassment guide you, but take immediate action to protect yourself and educate others about this scam.
