The chat partners who communicate with a false identity play a nasty game taking advantage of the emerging love feelings of those who are ultimately deceived. The scam is as simple as it is devious.
After you have made contact with a supposedly attractive chat partner via a social platform, communication becomes increasingly more intimate. At the end, you are asked to take off your clothing, perform sexual acts on yourself and send them via video. Except that on the other side there is a fraudster who has nothing to do with the person he is posing as and is only interested in ripping off his victim.
This is followed by a threat to publish the video online if the requested amount of money is not paid. A 57-year-old from Hohberg had to endure this vile experience. After he transferred a three-digit amount to a German account on Sunday, the next demand immediately followed for an even larger sum of money. Shame often prevents you from reporting the crime to the police. However, the man turned to the right place after the second demand for money.
Sextortion – police recommendations on how you can protect yourself from this type of crime:
- Don't agree to a video chat too quickly.
- If in doubt: first tape off the chat camera so that you can only communicate verbally and observe what is happening.
- Do not consent to exposure or intimate acts in video chats if you have only known the person for a short time.
If you have already been a victim of sextortion, the police recommend the following:
- Do not transfer money. The blackmail usually doesn't stop after the payment.
- Report it to the police.
- Contact the site operator and request that the images be deleted. Inappropriate content can be reported to the site operator using buttons specially set up for this purpose.
