A teenager from the northern Ortenau district fell victim to so-called “sextortion” on Saturday evening. The victim was asked several times by an unknown person to transfer money. If he does not follow the instructions, intimate pictures of the injured party would be published, which are said to have been taken in a previous chat via the “Snapchat” application. Ultimately, the victim transferred an amount in the low four-digit range.

What is “Sextortion”?

“Sextortion” is a form of crime in which the victim is threatened with publishing nude photos or videos. As in the current case, the perpetrators' approach is quite simple and devious. After the fraudsters have contacted the later victims via social platforms, an intimate picture of the supposed chat partner follows. The victim is then asked to also send sexual recordings, otherwise the conversation is over. After sending the recordings, the threat follows that the image or video will be published online if the requested amount of money is not paid.

Police recommendations on how you can protect yourself from this type of crime:

  • Don't rush into agreeing to a video chat or taking intimate pictures.
  • If in doubt: first tape off the chat camera so that you can only communicate verbally and observe what is happening.
  • Do not consent to exposure or intimate acts via video or chat if you have only known the person for a short time.

What to do as a victim?

  • Do not transfer money. The blackmail usually doesn't stop after the payment.
  • Report it to the police.
  • Contact the site operator and request that the images be deleted. Inappropriate content can be reported to the site operator using buttons specially set up for this purpose.
