Sweaty hands, heart palpitations and a telephone receiver that lies menacingly in the hand. A phone call - a shocking call that could change the lives of an elderly couple forever. The grandson in danger, a supposedly fatal accident, a bail and the Stuttgart district court as the setting for the drama.
Shock call: bail requested due to accident
It starts innocently enough. “Just” a phone call. But the news is shocking: a grandson who was involved in a serious accident urgently needs money for bail. Of course you want to help. Cash amounting to 45,000 euros and gold are also accepted for payment. Now the only question that remains is: Where should you leave the money and valuables? – At the Stuttgart District Court. For many, a place of respectability and law. In this case, however, a place of fraud. Nevertheless, it would have worked if it hadn't been for an unexpected "helper": namely the fact that the couple couldn't find the specified handover location.
Distrust in the right place
Confused and worried about their grandson, the elderly couple finally contacted the real authorities at the district court. But even when they met real police officers there, they refused to believe that they had almost become victims of a scam. It's shocking and telling at the same time how perfect fraudsters spin their scams today.
How do you protect yourself?
The vice president of the Stuttgart District Court, Andreas Arndt, warns against such shock calls and gives important tips:
- Official letters : If a deposit is actually due, a written notification is always sent. Everyone should be skeptical when demands for money are made over the phone.
- Check correct telephone numbers : Police or prosecutors do not call from a cell phone number. A look at the area code can be crucial!
- Receipts : Handing over money without a receipt, especially for such amounts, is always risky.
- Gold and Jewelry : The real police would never accept valuables as bail.
- Do not give personal information such as your own cell phone number on the phone : Fraudsters could try to block the line and avoid getting help elsewhere and the fraud being exposed.
Conclusion
Always stay alert! Technology makes our lives easier in many areas. But fraudsters can also use them against us. The incident in Stuttgart once again reminds us to remain vigilant and be informed. If you receive unknown calls or messages, it is important to inform yourself and exercise caution. It's better to ask more questions than to fall victim to such a scam.
