Unknown people tricked an 82-year-old into believing her daughter was in distress and tricked the woman into handing over six-figure euros in cash and coins.

Shock calls – They always work

At around 1:30 p.m. the woman's cell phone rang at her address in Hohenlohekreis. A male person who identified himself as an employee of a law firm came forward and claimed that his daughter had caused an accident. A child was killed in this accident and a prison sentence could only be avoided by paying bail.

The person called then drove to Heidelberg on the instructions of the fake lawyer and handed over cash and coins in a blue and white plastic bag to a young man aged around 5 p.m. from a car on Goethestrasse in Weststadt, near the district court around 20 to 25 years old, with a slim stature and a height of around 1.60 to 1.65 meters.

Looking for witnesses

The Künzelsau criminal police have started the investigation. Witnesses who were able to observe the handover on Goethestrasse in Heidelberg (near the Heidelberg District Court) or who saw the person collecting a blue and white plastic bag in the Heidelberg area are asked to call 07940 9400.

The police advise

To protect yourself from such scams, the Baden-Württemberg State Criminal Police Office and the Heilbronn Police Headquarters advise:

  • The police will never call you on the police emergency number 110.
  • Don't let yourself be put under pressure on the phone. Hang up the phone and get rid of scammers.
  • Become suspicious of requests for quick decisions, contact with strangers, and the release of personal information, cash, jewelry, or valuables.
  • Dial 110 and report the matter.
  • Do not use the call back button, otherwise you will end up back with the perpetrators.
  • Do not talk about your personal or financial circumstances on the phone.
  • Consult with your family or people you trust.
  • Contact your family or people using the numbers you know.
