The Düsseldorf police repeatedly warn against the perpetrators' scam and provide prevention tips.

Shock callers always successful

According to the current investigation, a caller contacted the Düsseldorf resident on Thursday evening. She pretended to be his daughter on the phone and tearfully pretended to have caused a fatal traffic accident. Further phone calls followed over a period of almost three hours with alleged police officers, a lawyer, the public prosecutor's office and the fines office.

The senior was led to believe that he would have to raise a significant amount of money to avoid his daughter's imprisonment. Finally, the perpetrators instructed their victim to let the money down from a window onto the street. After an unknown person appeared at the home address in Unterbilk and pretended to be a police officer, the senior citizen rappelled the money in a paper bag out of his window onto the street. The perpetrators stole a six-figure amount of cash.

The police warn

The Düsseldorf police repeatedly warn of the perpetrators' diverse scams and provide important prevention tips:

    • Be suspicious if callers do not answer the phone with their name. Don't guess who is calling; instead, ask callers to give their own names. Better yet: If you have the slightest doubt, hang up immediately!
    • Don't let yourself be pushed or put under pressure. Take the time to verify the caller's information. Call the person in question at the number you know and confirm the situation.
    • If a caller demands money or other valuables from you: Discuss this with family members or someone close to you.
    • If you hear a call that seems suspicious, inform the police immediately on the emergency number 110.
    • Never give money, valuables or jewelry to unknown people.
    • Discuss such cases with family and friends. Inform older people in particular and warn them about the perpetrators' scams.

The police also point out the “Well looked after in…” app , where seniors are warned of a series of scam calls via “push messages” if necessary.
