Around 50 reported shock calls were reported on Monday, June 20th. The focal point was in the area of the Trier police station.
Victims of shock calls react calmly
Most people recognized the scams, ended the conversations and then informed the police. For example, the perpetrators posed on the phone as police officers or relatives who reported alleged serious accidents or emergencies of loved ones. Sometimes they also talked about alleged break-ins in the neighborhood and offered to keep money and valuables safe.
Completely different stories
It is important to know that the perpetrators constantly vary their legends and come up with new methods to lure their potential victims.
Two fraud attempts successful
In two cases, the perpetrators were unfortunately successful with such shock calls: an 82-year-old handed over a four-figure amount of money to a young man in Trier-Quint around 12:50 p.m. An unknown voice had previously pretended to be a granddaughter on the phone. She should sign and pay money to a notary. The injured party was questioned about her assets. The caller then told her that the money would be picked up by a messenger from the notary. She shouldn't talk to the messenger. After the handover and another call, she had doubts about the story, so she contacted her relatives and discovered the fraud.

Further transfer of money
Another money handover, also with a four-digit amount, occurred around 3:15 p.m. in the parking lot of a Trier supermarket, Im Wasserweg. An 80-year-old woman received several shock calls from fake police officers and alleged court employees. Allegedly her daughter caused a traffic accident and a pregnant woman died. A deposit must be paid in order to release the daughter. The woman withdrew money and handed over the sum at the agreed meeting point.

Looking for witnesses
The Trier Criminal Investigation Department is looking for witnesses in both cases and is asking for information on 0651/97792290.
In another case, an 84-year-old had already withdrawn money, but fortunately the transfer of the money was prevented by a visit from her daughter.
Urgent warning
The police urgently warn against disclosing personal details, bank details, living circumstances or similar confidential information to strangers over the phone. Neither the police, bank employees nor reputable business owners ask for such information on the phone.
Do not allow yourself to be persuaded over the phone to make transfers, remote data access or actions related to handing over money. Call your relatives, your bank or your police and make sure there about the alleged phone calls. To do this, use the telephone numbers you have and not the one displayed on the phone or given by the caller. The only people you can reach there are the scammers themselves!
In particular, inform your older family members and friends about such shock calls and scams from the perpetrators, as they are the preferred victims.
