The successor to the grandchild trick
The phone rings. The police. A family member has gotten into an emergency situation. Action and help must be taken immediately. “The man describes dramatically that his daughter has to be in custody because of the crime. But the parents can pay a deposit – 100,000 euros.”
Fake calls: fake police officers
Under the pretense of false facts, con artists want to take money out of older people's pockets. “This successor to the grandchild trick and the “fake policeman” scam is currently becoming more and more common in the southwest.” This is a matter of great concern to Oliver Hoffmann, deputy head of the economic crime department, LKA Baden-Württemberg.
Fraudsters pose as police or authorities
The fraudsters pretend to be police officers or authorities on the phone, use the element of surprise and come straight with their demand: a lot of money and immediately! The scammers' goal is to stimulate the victims' emotions so that their perception is influenced. Emotions dominate and gain the upper hand.
Then everything happens quickly: The money has to be obtained as quickly as possible and so-called “collectors” come to the site to receive the money. Unfortunately, the recipe for success seems to be working: the LKA Baden-Württemberg recorded damages of around 11 million euros last year, and the trend is rising.
The network of fraudsters and how you can protect yourself from them
Most of the time, if they do, the investigators only catch the people who picked them up. However, the actual pullers are networks that are mostly located abroad.
To protect yourself from telephone scams, it is crucial to stay calm and not allow yourself to be stressed.
If something seems strange to you, it's best to contact the police.
