The Hanover criminal police repeatedly become aware of cases in which people of all ages are deprived of their savings and valuables. The perpetrators use different tricks such as shock calls.

In a current case from Friday, May 12, 2023, a 76-year-old from the Hanover district of Döhren received a call from her alleged daughter. The woman on the phone told the senior citizen about a fatal traffic accident that she had caused. The fraudster then handed the phone over to an alleged judge, who explained to the shocked 76-year-old that she had to “buy” her daughter out with cash and jewelry so that she would be spared prison. The elderly woman was supposed to hand over the money and jewelry to a court employee on her doorstep. The woman handed over cash and jewelry in the mid-four-figure range to an unknown man.

Another attempted fraud on the phone: Senior woman exposes call from alleged professor

On May 15, 2023, an 81-year-old senior citizen received a call from a supposed professor from a hospital in Hanover. The lady from Garbsen-Berenbostel was told that her son was in the intensive care unit and urgently needed expensive medication. Luckily, the woman became suspicious and the conversation ended.

The shocked people are often put under massive pressure during telephone conversations by various interlocutors, such as relatives, police, public prosecutors and judges, in order to ultimately persuade them to hand over their savings. In such cases, the Hanover criminal police investigate commercial and gang-related extortion or fraud and make it clear: these are by no means trivial crimes. There is a high level of criminal energy from organized gangs behind the calls.

Police information

If you are called by alleged police officers or alleged relatives in emergency situations, the following police advice applies:

  • Don't let such calls worry you and hang up!
  • Do not respond to the demands of the caller!
  • Police or other authorities and institutions never ask for bail amounts over the phone!
  • Dial the emergency number (110) and report it!

The actual police never make detailed inquiries about assets and valuables over the phone! Neither the police nor the judiciary put those called under such pressure during the conversation! Despite requests to the contrary from the perpetrator, contact relatives, friends or other people you trust!
