After the Lüdenscheiders, two more seniors from Menden and Meinerzhagen fell for shock calls on Friday. In both cases, the daughter or niece was said to have caused a fatal accident. The fake police officers and prosecutors demanded bail to spare their daughter or niece from imprisonment.

“I killed a woman.”

On Friday around 12:30 p.m., the perpetrators caused an almost 90-year-old woman from Meinerzhagen to panic. A crying and sobbing woman spoke up: “I killed a woman.” The voice sounded like her niece’s. An alleged police officer took over the phone and demanded bail from the elderly woman. Otherwise the niece would stay in prison.

The woman collected all the cash and put it in a bag as instructed. The alleged police officer explained that there was no patrol car available at the moment, but the money would be picked up “immediately”. This is how it happened: At around 2:30 p.m., an extremely friendly man came to the front door, took the five-figure sum and disappeared. The money courier had blonde hair and a broad face. The injured party estimated he was around 40 to 45 years old. He was carrying a shoulder bag.

“A child died in the accident.”

Shocked callers at midday demanded a 90,000 euro “deposit” from a 78-year-old mother from Menden. Allegedly her daughter caused an accident in which a child died. The fraudsters completely threw the woman off her feet. Before the husband, who came in from outside, fully understood what was going on, the wife ran out of the house. The receiver was still next to the telephone. The husband also spoke to one of the fraudsters, but suspected the fraud. He informed his bank. At this point, however, his wife had already withdrawn a larger sum.

As it later turned out, she was on the way to the Paderborn district court. The money transfer should take place there. On the way she constantly called the perpetrators. The husband contacted the police, who launched a search for his wife. The father had now found out that the real daughter was fine: of course she hadn't caused a traffic accident. Several attempts to reach the wife by cell phone failed. The man finally reached her and was able to convince her that her daughter had not killed anyone. In the afternoon the police stopped the search.

More fraud charges

On Thursday, an 80-year-old woman from Lüdenscheid had already paid bail. The police in Lüdenscheid received eight further reports of false police officers or grandchild fraudsters. A lie about an alleged Covid illness was told several times. In one case, attentive bank employees prevented money from being withdrawn and handed over to the fraudsters. On Wednesday, the Lüdenscheid police counted eleven reports.

The number of calls actually made is likely to be several times higher. There were further calls in Plettenberg, Kierspe, Iserlohn and Schalksmühle. It cannot be ruled out that other victims paid money. The police strongly advise you to file a report.

Older people in particular should not underestimate the danger of such calls. The fraudsters cleverly rely on fear and panic and put their victims under massive time pressure. Seniors repeatedly fall for such callers, even though they thought they were informed about the fraudsters' scams. On the phone and in panic mode, they find it difficult to recognize the crying voice on the other end. They believe what they are told.

The police are therefore asking relatives in particular to continually point out the problem to their older family members. There are no such deposits as demanded by the false public prosecutor in Germany. The police or public prosecutor do not send out anyone to collect money.

When it comes to shock calls, the police advise: “Don’t allow yourself to be disturbed on the phone! Call the real police – on 110!” (In Austria: 133)
