Shock calls often successful
At around 10:30 a.m., an 81-year-old Helmstedt woman's phone rang. A man came forward claiming to be a local court employee. He now explained to the elderly woman that her son had caused a traffic accident in which a little girl was hit and died a short time later.
Your son now needs a deposit of 54,000 euros. The completely excited senior citizen stated that she only had 15,000 euros. The caller agreed to this and explained that he would send someone to collect the money as the district court cash register would be closing shortly.
A little later, still under the impression of the call, the 81-year-old handed the money to an unknown man.
As the situation progressed, the senior citizen began to have doubts and confided in a relative, who immediately called the police. It was in the presence of the police officers that the desperate senior citizen truly became aware of the extent of the perfidious fraud.
70,000 euros deposit required
At around the same time, a 76-year-old from the Helmstedt district was scammed out of 70,000 euros using the same scam. A man came forward who introduced himself as Mr. Schröder from the Wolfsburg police.
He now explained to the elderly woman that her daughter had killed a woman in a traffic accident. The stranger gave the daughter's name, so she believed the caller. The 76-year-old demanded to be allowed to speak to her daughter. A crying woman's voice then spoke up, addressing the Helmstedter as Mama and begging her to help her.
The senior citizen was then asked for her mobile phone number and told her that a public prosecutor would be contacting her immediately regarding bail payments. However, she was not allowed to end the conversation with him or the conversation that was about to take place with the public prosecutor under any circumstances, as the conversations were being recorded for the criminal proceedings.
Call from supposed criminal lawyer
Just a little later, the supposed public prosecutor called on his cell phone and demanded a deposit of 70,000 euros for the daughter's release. When the elderly woman told him that she didn't have that much money, the caller became increasingly aggressive and increased the pressure with whining noises in the background .
Now the shocked woman was ready to pay the demanded sum. She was told that an employee of the district court would collect the money immediately. However, for reasons of confidentiality, the man was not allowed to speak to her. Around midday she handed the money over to an unknown person.
The senior citizen was kept on the phone for another two hours until she finally realized that fraudsters were behind the call. A query to the daughter confirmed the bad suspicion.
Further shock calls were unsuccessful
There were a large number of shock calls throughout the day on Wednesday in the city of Helmstedt and the district. Fortunately, those called were sensitized and many of them did not fall for the scams of the telephone scammers.
The unscrupulousness of the perpetrators knows no bounds. verbally intimidated if they hesitate or ask questions . In addition, they are asked to keep the conversation going so that contact or reflection is not possible.
The police therefore strongly advise you to hang up immediately on calls that involve an emergency and/or a demand for money. In addition, the named relatives and the police should be notified.
In addition, the police point out that neither the police nor the public prosecutor's office will ask for bail over the phone and that a person will never be sent to collect you.
