We are now in the middle of the “dark season”. Winter is coming and road safety is an important topic.
The police therefore give a few important tips that you should heed when driving. Of course, we don’t want to withhold this advice from you:
Winter and the first icy days have arrived. The first weather-related traffic accidents have already occurred. Even if it is difficult for some road users, clear car windows are just as essential for safe participation in road traffic as the correct vehicle tires.

Anyone who drives off with icy windows is not only committing an administrative offense, they are also endangering the health and lives of themselves and other road users. For safe winter driving, here are some tips from the Merzig police station :
- Before setting off, clean all misted windows and completely remove ice crystals and snow from the vehicle windows. Remember that fogged up windows impair your visibility and increase your reaction time.
- Make sure your windshield wipers work well and always keep your vehicle windows clean. Check the windshield washer system regularly and refill cleaning agent and antifreeze in a timely manner.
- Clean the exterior mirrors so that you can see other road users in good time.
- Check the front and rear lights regularly. Clean these, the license plates as well as the hood and roof of the car from snow and ice.
- Do not leave the engine running while stationary to de-ice the windows. On the one hand, this harms the environment and, on the other hand, it constitutes an administrative offense.
- Icy windows can be prevented, for example, by having a covered parking space or by covering them with a protective film.
- Always carry protective film, a whisk, an ice scraper and, if necessary, de-icing products in your vehicle.
- Adjust your driving speed to the visibility and road conditions. Remember that the braking distance is longer on slippery roads in winter.
