A video is currently doing the rounds in which you can observe a strange phenomenon in a cloudy sky, which is being interpreted in different directions in the comments.

This video is about:

Within the first 10 seconds you can observe an apparition moving from left to right in the sun's halo. This will not be commented on or interpreted further on the site that shared this video. However, the interpretations that can be read in the comments are all the more adventurous.

Apparition and Project Blue Beam

It says someone is walking through the clouds. Other commentators say it is an apparition of God. Still others talk about “Project Blue Beam” and that one should not be deceived. Even the SUN covers the topic and quotes the daring interpretations under the video without comment.

Project Blue Beam? What is this again? To go into detail here would go beyond the scope, but broadly speaking it is a conspiracy theory related to the “New World Order” (NWO), in which people are influenced by the appearance of religious symbols in the sky or UFOs in order to make them compliant for the day when the said “New World Order” is to occur.

Now the whole thing sounds very adventurous – what is it really?

The truth

To get straight to the point: it cannot be said clearly with the existing evidence (video) because there is simply no factual basis and the quality of the video is not very good.

But what you can do: Use a heuristic principle from scholasticism, which is used in the theory of science and scientific methodology:

Occam's razor

Razor? Yes. But of course only metaphorically. The basic point is that the simplest explanation for a phenomenon is usually the correct one. The more conditions that have to be met for an explanation to be valid, the less likely the explanation is, or “Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem” – “Entities must not be multiplied beyond what is necessary.”

Named after William of Ockham, a philosopher and writer who lived in the 13th and 14th centuries, this principle describes an approach to a question in which the illogical and improbable answers are removed as if with a razor - what is then left is probably the correct explanation.

An example

If you cook an egg for breakfast and it ends up being too hard, the explanation could be that a rift in the space-time continuum caused time for the egg to pass faster, which then results in This has been cooked for far too long, so it is hard.

However, you could also simply claim that you forgot to look at the clock and that's why the egg got so hard.

Both would explain the phenomenon. However, for the first variant with the continuum, a number of requirements would have to be met in order for the hypothesis to be confirmed. For example, the mere fact that there really is such a thing as a rift in the space-time continuum and that this actually had an influence on the breakfast egg.

Transferred to the video, this would mean that the apparition is either a sign from God, a holographic projection as part of “Project Blue Beam”…

...or just a weather phenomenon. Or the remnant of a turbulence covering areas of clouds?

“But you can see something there…”

Yes, of course. And if you know what it could possibly be according to certain theories, you will see exactly what you want to see. Our brain is to blame for this: it strives to discover familiar patterns in all forms. In this case, God or whoever. This phenomenon is called pareidolia and is well known: A face was “clearly” recognized in the first images of the surface of Mars taken by the Viking 1 probe on July 25, 1976:

However, upon closer inspection we now know that this face was just an optical illusion:

You can clearly see the mountain, which looked like a face through a play of light and shadow.

The facts

What we do know is that the video was taken near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA and that there was an active storm there at the time.

We know that there are different weather phenomena that can look like this.

So we can assume that we are not wrong with this simple and plausible “weather phenomenon solution”.

And now?

Theoretically, everyone could now get a complete picture, evaluate this phenomenon and take into account whether it is more likely that a world conspiracy elite conjures something like this up in the sky using huge hologram projectors, or whether it is even God himself there through the clouds, or whether it's just turbulence or a rain plume that looks like a walker in the right light.

In any case, we cannot explain exactly what it is based on the facts, but we can weed out unnecessary assumptions, especially in this case where the alternative explanations are already quite far-fetched. Especially since the phenomenon can be explained quite easily and the “natural” explanation is still the most plausible.
