The Simpsons are said to have repeatedly predicted the future. An episode from 1993 is supposed to prove this in the case of COVID-19.
The Simpsons are said to have predicted the outbreak of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2
There are significant differences between current events and those shown in the episode.
None of the scenes apply to COVID-19.
We once again received inquiries about an episode of the popular animated series The Simpsons. The series is said to have repeatedly “predicted the future.” In this case, the exploitation of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19:

1993, Season 4 Episode 21 of the Simpsons.
The fact check
The rumor has been circulating for a long time. We reported on the theory at the end of January 2020 The scene is actually from Season 4, Episode 21 and first aired in 1993. Specifically, this is the excerpt here:
Colleague Ralf took a closer look at the matter and writes:
The secret meeting
The episode begins with the “big secret meeting of America’s media empires” as they plan the “next fake crisis.” It is decided to infect humanity with a new, deadly virus.
Comparison possibility with 2019-nCoV: Not at all!
Unless you are a firm believer in conspiracy theories and cannot imagine that viruses arise, develop and spread naturally. It is precisely those conspiracy theorists who are actually being targeted in this scene.
Addition March 4, 2020:
Incidentally, that scene is not from the same episode, which numerous users pointed out to us.
This is the beginning of the episode “The Fool Monty”, Season 22, Episode 6 :
The release of the virus
That virus should be attached to “things that are in every household”. We then see how a sick employee at a factory in Japan coughs into a package containing a juice extractor , whereupon the germs get into the package and infect Homer Simpson weeks later.

The scene takes a critical look at the harsh working conditions in Japan, where people basically drag themselves to work with a bad cold and a smashed pelvis.
However, this scene does not apply to the new coronavirus: the virus is released in Japan , not in China . For some people it may be racist that they all look the same, but the two countries are around 3,000 kilometers apart.
The virus in packages
In the scenes, the residents of Springfield contain the packages from Japan and are immediately infected with the virus.
Comparison possibility with 2019-nCoV: Not at all!
Another flaw is the virus's survival time: coronaviruses survive on surfaces a few hours Even if 2019-nCoV were to be a really tough beast and could survive for days, even if an employee sneezed directly on the goods, it is more than unlikely that the virus would still be alive if it were in a person weeks later Package arrives.
In this respect, consumers who have ordered something from China via “Wish”, for example, should not worry that their goods are infected.
Addition March 4, 2020:
The newscaster
In the last picture you can see the news anchor Kent Brockman, behind him an overlay with the words "Corona Virus" and a kitten (which don't really match anyway).
However, the image also comes from the episode “The Fool Monty”, Season 22, Episode 6 , and the image was manipulated; the lettering reads “Apocalypse Meow”:

Conclusion
Of course, there were already worrying flu waves and variants in the 1990s; just remember the bird flu and the swine flu, where it was possible that people could also become infected. The creators of The Simpsons did nothing other than mix a recurring troubling topic with social criticism and a pinch of conspiracy theory.
However, the images and video from that Simpsons episode shown on social media cannot even begin to compare with the new coronavirus; the interpretation that The Simpsons “predicted” the new coronavirus is simply nonsense.
