The claim

Since September 1st, 2022, deliberate misinformation has been circulating on social networks, calling in the name of the SLUB and the SLUB General Director Katrin Stump to donate Russian books to the library for heating purposes.

Our conclusion

This is a targeted disinformation campaign and criminal charges have already been filed because of the fake letter.

A photo of a fake letter with the SLUB logo, the sender of the library administration and the contact of the SLUB general director is being distributed on various platforms, including Telegram, TikTok, Facebook and Twitter, which is intended to give the impression that the SLUB had created this letter. SLUB has already filed a criminal complaint because of the forged letter.

It is this fake “SLUB letter” with the following content (sic!)

"Dear Readers. Confronting Russian aggression is our common cause. Russian literature has no place on your bookshelf. Due to the expected heating cuts in autumn and winter, we ask you to donate books by Russian authors to be used for heating in the library. This way you can still read good books even if Putin cuts off gas supplies. library management”

Katrin Stump, General Director of SLUB Dresden, says this

“As a library, we stand for basic democratic values, reliable information and an objective discourse on socio-political issues. I am shocked that several libraries have been affected by manipulative disinformation in the past few days and that the masterminds do not shy away from personal attacks. This shows once again what dangers this poses for our democratic society. The SLUB takes decisive action against misinformation like this and will, among other things, continue to raise awareness of the responsible and vigilant handling of disinformation through events and exhibitions.”

The Hamburg library halls have already been affected by similar attacks in the past few days. We reported about it HERE.
