Smart trackers like Apple's AirTags or Samsung's SmartTags have the potential to make our lives easier by helping us quickly find lost items like keys or bags. However, they also pose risks, as our research shows: the small, inconspicuous devices could be misused by stalkers to pursue their victims.
How do smart trackers work?
Smart trackers are small devices that connect to the user's smartphone via Bluetooth or other wireless technologies. As soon as an item to which a tracker is attached is lost, the user can use an app to display the location of the tracker and thus the item on a map. The location data is passed on anonymously by other devices in the respective manufacturer's network, so that even objects that are beyond the reach of your own smartphone can be tracked down.
Potential for misuse of smart trackers
Although smart trackers are designed to help locate lost items, they could also be used for unwanted purposes. Stalkers could, among other things, hide a tracker in their victim's bag, car or bike to track their movements. Because the devices are small and inconspicuous, they are difficult to detect. They are also inexpensive and easily available, which further increases the potential for misuse.
Manufacturers’ measures against misuse
To minimize the risk of cyberstalking, some manufacturers have integrated security features into their smart trackers. For example, Apple introduced a feature that notifies users when an unknown AirTag is near them. Samsung has implemented similar security measures for its SmartTags. Still, it's questionable whether these measures are enough to prevent abuse, especially if stalkers are tech-savvy and find ways to bypass these security features.
Raising awareness and protective measures
To protect against possible misuse of smart trackers, users should be aware of the risks and watch out for suspicious activity. If you suspect that an unknown tracker is nearby, you can try to track it down using the respective manufacturer's app and, if necessary, inform the police. You should also make sure to protect personal items such as bags and cars from unauthorized access.
Nightmare stalking – psychological terror with new smart trackers? ► FULL SCREEN
The VOLLBILD journalists Sonja Peteranderl and Anke Gehrmann meet stalking victims, research frightening cases and come across new, perfidious strategies used by perpetrators. They test the trackers themselves and show how difficult it is to prove stalking with trackers. They want to know from experts: How big is the danger? How far do the stalkers go? And how do manufacturers protect against stalking misuse of their devices?

- The “Weisse Ring” offers comprehensive help for victims of stalking and violence
- The “No Stalk” app allows those affected to document stalking evidence for the police and courts
- The initiative “A Team Against Digital Violence” advises advice centers and provides support in the area of digital violence
- The “AirGuard” app developed by TU Darmstadt warns Android and iPhone users about trackers from other Android / iOS
Conclusion: Smart trackers can be extremely helpful in everyday life by making it easier to find lost items. However, they also pose risks if they are misused by stalkers or criminals. Manufacturers should continue to work on security features to reduce the potential for abuse and ensure privacy protection. Users should be aware of the risks and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves from cyberstalking and other threats. It remains to be seen whether future developments in this area can close further security gaps while maintaining user convenience.
