80 percent of smartphone owners check their device for news as the first activity of the day. "That is not healthy. Smartphones are good servants, but not in the first hour after you wake up. If you scroll through emails and check Instagram right away, you're skipping important theta waves and going straight into beta brain waves, which have a significant impact on the brain's physical structure," warns nutritionist Lovneet Batra .

Dopamine is released

During the day, the brain is usually in the beta brain wave area, which is characterized by concentration and mental activity. As long as a person thinks, works, concentrates strongly and is wide awake, beta waves are generated by the brain. Theta waves, on the other hand, characterize the “twilight state” between wakefulness and sleep.

However, when you check social media, check email, or scroll through conversation threads early in the morning, your brain releases high levels of dopamine, a neurochemical that gives you a feeling of being rewarded, which stimulates repetition of the behaviors that led to dopamine release in the first place.

Morning routine is lost

According to Batra, the morning routine is often lost. “We give in to our cell phones and react to what we see instead of focusing on how we feel.” The day starts with harmful stress. Instead, she advises, you should take a short walk or do ten minutes of yoga. Journaling is also helpful. It’s about “looking inward.” You record what moves you in writing.

Batra also has a practical tip: “First make your bed.” Bathing in natural light for ten to 15 minutes isn’t bad either. And even a carefully put together breakfast can distract from your smartphone. Whatever you do, you should make a plan to avoid falling victim to your smartphone again, says Batra.
