Be it a camera, radio or remote control: electronic devices that have long been indispensable in everyday life are increasingly being replaced by smartphones. An increasing number of users are now turning to their cell phones for certain tasks or services.

Replacement for alarm clock, camera and landline telephone

At the top is the alarm clock, which 60 percent replace completely or largely with their cell phone (2022: 56 percent), followed by the photo camera (54 percent, 2022: 51 percent), video camera (44 percent, 2022: 37 percent) and landline telephone (40 percent. 2022: 31 percent). This is the result of a representative survey commissioned by Bitkom at the start of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (February 27th to March 2nd).

“The smartphone has developed into an all-round talent and will take on even more tasks in everyday life in the future. It is important that the devices replaced by smartphones are not left at home, but rather passed on, donated or recycled.”

Bitkom managing director Dr. Bernhard Rohleder

Special navigation devices are also increasingly being sidelined: 31 percent are now using their cell phones instead (2022: 19 percent). Flashlights (30 percent), radios (23 percent), wristwatches (19 percent), ticket machines in local and long-distance transport (18 percent), TV remote controls (7 percent) and even the baby monitor (4 percent) are also being replaced more and more frequently.

1,004 people aged 16 and over were surveyed, including 780 smartphone users.

Importance continues to increase

The vast majority (91 percent) are convinced that the importance of smartphones will continue to increase. A third (33 percent) also believe that these will be replaced by data glasses or smartwatches in the future. 29 percent are even of the opinion that there will be no smartphones at all in ten years. However, only 2 percent believe that they will one day be replaced by chips implanted in the body.
