The cell phone was just in my jacket pocket - and now it's suddenly gone. Many users know this uneasy feeling. A fifth (21 percent) have already had their device stolen. And almost half (45 percent) say they have already lost their phone. These are the results of a representative survey commissioned by the digital association Bitkom among 947 people in Germany who use a smartphone.
Smartphone loss is more common than theft
18 percent say that they have been the victim of a smartphone theft once, 2 percent have already been the victim of it twice and 1 percent even three or more times. And 20 percent have lost their communication device once, 12 percent twice and 13 percent even more often.
“The smartphone is a constant companion for most people. It is a communications center, appointment calendar, photo album, bank branch and first point of contact for purchases. It is therefore worth taking some basic security measures. Easy access to the smartphone should be prevented with a display lock, the localization function should be switched on and regular backups ensure that even if the device is lost, important data does not have to be missed.
Simran Mann, IT security expert at Bitkom
Regular data backup can also help if the device has not disappeared, but has broken and is no longer operational, for example after a fall. This has already happened to three quarters of cell phone users (76 percent). 18 percent have had a broken cell phone once, 28 percent twice and 30 percent three times or more.
Anyone who owns a smartphone takes it with them almost everywhere. 9 out of 10 (90 percent) say that they always have their device with them. Around three quarters (72 percent) have a bad feeling if they forget their device at home or in the office.
