The trick used to rip off gullible people is old hat. Not only seniors but also other age groups are now being targeted by criminals.
A new SMS rip-off scam is currently making the rounds. The perpetrators stop at nothing and pose as children, grandchildren, nephews or nieces and even good friends. They claim to have gotten into an emergency through no fault of their own and urgently need cash or ask to transfer funds in real time.
A pensioner from the island of Usedom also received such a text message yesterday. He assumed that his daughter was writing to him and transferred 2,330 euros to another account. But that's not all, he should make further transfers. The pensioner was lucky because his bank noticed the fraud and contacted him immediately. At the same time, the credit institution tried to refund the money.
The German pensioner has now also spoken to his daughter. It is now clear to him that these messages did not come from her and that he has fallen victim to fraudsters.
How to protect yourself
The police advise: Regardless of whether you are contacted by call, text message, social media, messenger service or email, do not allow yourself to be put under pressure and take the time to look carefully. For example, call your children on the “old” and familiar cell phone number or landline number. This often makes the dizziness clear. Or ask personal questions. As a rule, perpetrators will not be able to answer these questions or will make up excuses. Reason enough to be suspicious.
If you have also been cheated, then don't be afraid to file a criminal complaint. You can submit this at any police station or online.
