The man received a text message at the end of May asking him to confirm an alleged customs fee for a package he had ordered and to enter his personal details.

The fraud case in detail

After clicking on the link contained in the message and entering his details, including his bank details, on the website that opened, he received a delivery confirmation. However, two days later he noticed that four unauthorized withdrawals had been made from his account, totaling almost 2,200 euros. The police are now investigating fraud.

Warning about the increase in such scams

Police spokeswoman Andrea Kempin emphasized that such scams are becoming more and more common, especially as more and more goods are ordered online. She warns: “Do not click on any links from such text messages. Instead, you can check the shipping status on the website where you ordered and contact customer service if necessary.”

Mimikama gives safety tips

The fraudsters rely on the fact that recipients of such SMS have actually ordered a package and therefore initially assume that the message is legitimate. We therefore strongly recommend that you not click on links in unsolicited SMS or emails, but always go directly to the official website of the respective provider.

If you are unsure whether a message, a link, an email, etc. is fake, you can send us a user request using our report form. You can find this HERE .
