The dossier created reports on unfair competition at the Facebook subsidiary Instagram
The social media company Snap Inc. has prepared a dossier on unfair competition practices by Facebook. As the Wall Street Journal reports, the Snapchat owner is said to want to submit the “Project Voldemort” dossier, named after the Harry Potter villain, to the US trade regulator Federal Trade Commission (FTC) .
Instagram threatens influencers
Snap Inc. has been in fierce competition with Facebook for some time. The competition is primarily conducted via the Facebook subsidiary Instagram. It was only in March 2019 that its co-founder Kevin Systrom admitted that the “Instagram Stories” function was a Snapchat clone.
“Instagram profiles have long been full of Snapchat links. Users wanted to combine these two products, so we gave them what they wanted,”
Systrom said.
However, Project Voldemort reports on even more extreme strategies that Facebook uses in competition. According to the dossier, Instagram pressured its influencers not to post Snapchat content on their profiles.

If they refused, the company would have threatened to revoke the coveted “Verified” status, which makes it easier for potential followers to find influencers.
Legal review possible
Another accusation from Snap Inc. is that Instagram blocks content in its search function that contains Snapchat filters or videos or uses the hashtag #snapchat.
Additionally, Instagram would not allow the links to Snapchat profiles on its platform. According to Snap Inc., Facebook uses such strategies to take action against all social media competitors that the company cannot buy up like Instagram.
According to the Snap report, the FTC is currently collecting statements from dozens of tech managers and app developers. These could lead to an antitrust investigation against Facebook.
