Similar concept to Chinese application Zao: “Cameo” inserts selfies into videos

The social media platform Snapchat is currently testing a new feature called “Snapchat Cameo”. This allows users to insert their selfies into videos or GIFs using deepfake technology.

The application makes it possible to move users' faces and give them different emotions.

“The best invention”

Snapchat has made a trial version of Cameo available to some users in France and is still working on the feature, "however Cameo will make its global debut soon," the company said. Reaction to the Cameo trial was positive. One user even said it was “the best invention Snap has ever made.”

With Cameo, users first upload a selfie of themselves. Then they choose between a male or female body type in the videos. The trial version of Cameo has some pre-made clips with background music that users can insert their faces into. After the deepfake video is ready, users can upload it to the chat.

Similar to Zao app

The new feature is basically reminiscent of the Chinese app Zao, which uses a deepfake to insert users' faces into scenes from well-known films. However, this application was sharply criticized due to concerns about a lack of data protection ( pressetext reported ).

Mimikama conclusion:

But it really isn't as “deepfake” as it sounds. From the small examples it is quite clear that in principle only the image is projected more or less statically onto the surface of the face and the facial expressions appear rather robotic.

Last but not least, how well the image fits into a scene depends heavily on the exposure of the image. Turns of the head and more complex facial expressions are not even present, which is why the result cannot really be classified as a “deepfake”.
