The free instant messaging service Snapchat decides to take stronger action against hate speech on the Internet
As derStandard and the Luzerner Zeitung report, Snapchat now wants to join platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, which had already committed to taking stronger action against hate crime on the Internet in 2016.
Snapchat is particularly popular among young people and is now also joining the EU rules for the protection of minors and against hate speech. EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova said:
“This is particularly important because it will help protect the younger generation who use Snapchat.”
Snapchat becomes the seventh major company to adopt the code of conduct. The code of conduct was developed in May 2016 by the four internet giants – Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube – as well as NGOs and the EU Commission and provides for stricter rules for the protection of minors and advertising.
In the fight against online terrorist propaganda, the EU Commission sometimes refrained from taking mandatory measures, but according to a study from January 2018, the code of conduct still delivered concrete results.
According to the EU Commission, around 70 percent of all content complained about in the EU countries was removed from the Internet on the basis of the voluntary commitment. 80 percent of the cases were deleted within 24 hours.
