Fur on the jacket collar or on the hat is trendy. But sometimes fake fur appears on the label even though real animal fur is being sold.
They are mainly found on hats and hoods: fur applications that are intended to enhance a piece of clothing. But how can you tell whether it is real animal fur or artificial fibers?
The label could provide information about this. But the information is not always correct. During an investigation in the laboratory , Stiftung Warentest discovered that some items of clothing had fake fur on the label. In fact, the fur trimmings came from animals that had been bred specifically to be brutally beaten to death or gassed.

If you don't want to rely on the label alone, you can check for yourself whether the fur is artificial or real using three simple methods.
- Blow. Real animal hair moves even with the slightest breeze. Faux fur is stiffer.
- Pulling apart. Pull the hair apart and check how it is secured. If you see something woven, it's fake fur. If you see leather, that is a sure sign of animal fur.
- Ignite. Of course, this only works after you've bought it: pluck a few hairs from the collar and hold them in a flame (don't set the whole jacket on fire!). Artificial hair forms clumps and smells like plastic. Real hair breaks down.
